Words that open doors

Knowing the right word changes how a place receives you. Ask for a cortado at a Málaga bar, look for the Heuriger sign in a Viennese vineyard suburb, or wait for the löyly in a Finnish sauna, and you are no longer only a visitor. The lexicon collects the local words and travel terms explained in our articles, each in one sentence.

Search for a word or filter by the two sides of the magazine. Every entry links to the article where the word appears in context.

How the lexicon grows

Each new article adds its own words, so the lexicon grows with the magazine. If you miss a word from a place we cover, write to us and we will consider it for a future story.

Questions

Why are some entries travel terms rather than local words?

Some of the most useful words on a trip are practical ones, such as the visitor’s tax in a spa town or the right of public access in Scandinavia. We include them because they explain how a place works, which is just as helpful as knowing what to order at the bar.
